1:1 Walt's Lilly Belle.

Post by Vaderdentist »

I've been meaning to add this here for some time. I acquired a live steam locomotive CP-173 and I'm converting it to Walt's Lilly Belle. The price was right and I couldn't resist jumping on my holy grail of model locomotives. She's 1/8 scale more or less. Ultimately I'll display her on a trestle in my train room. Here are my progress pics:

This is where she started:

This borrowed photo shows the goal I am reaching for. For me it was always the perfect paint scheme for the perfect Locomotive. As you can see many changes will have to occur to get her where I want her.

My journey began by taking a voyage from Augusta GA down to Melbourne Fla. to pick up this little beauty.

Here she is in her temporary holding area in my garage after the 16 hr round trip.

I began with some brass polishing and some minor alterations to LB specific details....like changing the number of pilot brace steps to her left side only and changing it from square to round.

Found this little oil lamp:

Removed the white from the front lead wheel tires and painted it Crimson. Also paint tested some hunter green for the steam chests. I chose a deep wine red to math the Carolwood Pacific Society's LB Bell. Perfect match. It will go on the domes and bell etc....

Image

Shining some more brass....the bands this time....

Image

began cleaning up the domes and began fitting the Disney LB Cab
Image

took some brass bar stock and made the pilot side steps using the official blueprints

Image

green domes were making me crazy so I painted the wine red

Image

Also polished the remaining bands.....will have to make one more for just behind the bell.

Added the LB bell.

WOW-OH-WOW! To think that I was blown away by your recent Bachmann kitbash project. This is even bigger news - literally! :D

Thank you for the pictures and please keep us updated with your progress. You've started the project that I've always wanted to do...but never did!

TOTALLY JEALOUS!!!

Ever since spending a bunch of summer weekends at the Riverside Live Steamers in the early 70's, getting a live steam 4-4-0 "like Walt's" has been a life's goal of mine...I don't know if it will ever happen for me, but it is great that you are living the dream!

new cowl for the headlamp based on Walt's LB Blueprints: This one is plastic so it springs up too high and won't hold it's shape, the final metal one will be more rounded from the profile and be just a tad shorter.
