I like it, but I wish they would've kept the Great Movie Ride...

Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway now Open at WDW

Post by tweetsie190 »

So, I'm sure y'all are all already aware of this, but Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway is finally open at Disney's Hollywood Studios inside the Chinese Theater, where the Great Movie Ride once sat. You'll take a journey along the "Runamuck Railroad", and with Goofy as your engineer, what could possibly go wrong? Anyway, here's an on-ride video by Attractions Magazine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvfypxnHD-o

I've seen several POV of this ride, and frankly, I'm totally underwhelmed. It utilizes a trackless dark ride system, and most of the gags are CGI. It's just a rework of Toy Story Mania from what I'm seeing.

Here is a pet peeve of mine... When the doors open on the back of the loco, Goofy's face is plainly in a TV screen. They didn't even bother to put a bigger screen in there so that the ½ circle at the top of the cab has the full image.

Honestly, I don't mind that most of the gags are CGI. from what I've seen, I'm very impressed with it. I honestly think it's a worthy replacement of the Great Movie Ride, but that's just me. You are entitled to your own opinion, and I respect that.

Looks like a solid attraction to me. Fun, entertaining and immersive, like actually being inside a cartoon. Would be the perfect fit in Toontown.

At first, I didn't like the new renditions of the characters, but they seem to have grown on me.

From what I've seen of it via online videos, it looks pretty neat. I like how it does not have a height limit so everyone can ride it together. I am definitely not a fan of screen based attractions since I don't pay theme park admission ticket prices to watch a movie, but I don't see how they could have realistically pulled off this "entering a cartoon" idea without using a lot of screens. Cartoon worlds are flat, no doubt about it.

It also has a dark ride vehicle themed as a steam locomotive with actual working rods, so I definitely love that!

We were able to ride this a few times before the parks shutdown, and it was great! Yes, it's not a true train, but if you watch the new batch of Mickey Mouse cartoons, it makes more sense (at least to me) how this all goes down, plus it does exist in a cartoon world. Goofy in the cab is actually pretty cool, the rods moving are a nice touch, and there is a tribute to Walt at the ride exit. I actually like this over the Great Movie Ride!
