Collecting thoughts/Holy Grail

Post by Steve DeGaetano »

Back around 1994 or so was when I first started thinking that it might be neat to collect a couple items related to the Disneyland Railroad. To be honest, I didn't really give it a whole lot of thought. I knew there probably wouldn't be much available. And at first, that notion seemed correct. I remember buying a "floaty" pen with a DRR train inside, a smashed penny, and a postcard or two from the souvenir stand. Not much at all.

As I learned more and met more people, however, my eyes were opened. Soon, I figured the crowning jewel of my small collection would be a Santa Fe & Disneyland engineer hat patch. I vaguely remember seeing the design in my youth--when I was maybe 6 or 7 years old. My recollection of the details of the patch was very poor, however. So much so that when I once saw a blue and white standard Santa Fe patch in a hobby shop, I thought that would suffice!

Going to Disneyana shows really opened my eyes to what was out there: actual attraction posters; costume pieces; vintage SF&D RR tickets, even train drumheads! I was truly astounded. But I was hooked, and I started wanting to collect more and more. Pretty soon, the stuff sold in the Park didn't appeal to me as much (although I still bought what I liked). But when I found you could obtain actual "pieces" of the Disneyland Railroad, I knew where my focus lay.

I remember beholding my first Conductor badge. At first, having one seemed the coolest thing in the world--a piece of the DRR; but I didn't want to stop there. I wanted to find some "variations." Then a hat to put one on. Next it was old engineer hats and hat patches. Pretty soon, I thought that it might be neat to have "something" from three general categories: I wanted a piece of a locomotive; a piece off a car; and costume pieces from the cast members who made it all operate (which I already had). And little by little, that desire was fulfilled. And back when I was single with no kids, it was easy to spend what I needed to get a neat piece.

Nowadays, I don't collect too much, for a couple reasons: First, I think I have all I would want; and second, there really isn't any item out there that's a "must have" for me (unless it was something crazy, like a bell or whistle). But there was one piece that always eluded me: One of the side name plates that once adorned my favorite engine, the E.P. Ripley. At one time, just after the plates were removed during the engine's rebuild in the late 1990s, I had a connection (outside the park) who knew the person to whom one of the plates belonged. Despite prolonged attempts, I was never able to procure it:

I guess there would be other neat things to get; I've never had a drumhead, and probably couldn't afford one anyway. But that cab side plate remains my personal Holy Grail.

So, what do you collect, why, and what's your "Holy Grail?"

I guess I'm not really that much of a collector. I do have some items, such as a few blueprints of the locomotive drawings, a few FWRR spikes, and some of the builder plate reproductions, among other things. And like Steve D, I think it would be cool to have some actual "pieces" of the railroads, not just merchandise for the sake of creating merchandise.

So I suppose I don't really have a holy grail, necessarily. Some something off the WDWRR would be nice, although I don't have anything specific in mind. And I do wish I had been able to get the builder plate reproductions for Disneyland's #1 and #2 - those were cool!

Interesting topic! Lately, I've been collecting toy claw machines. One of my recent faves is the "Space Crane" from the Toy Story movies. They're shaped like rockets(or footballs with fins - take your pick.) And they work just like the real thing: with a two-way gimball for moving the claw, and a button which automatically drops the claw, closes, rises and travels to the payout chute, where it opens and drops whatever it has picked up. No other toy comes close to this one's style and functional authenticity.

It comes in at least two variants I know of. One was available at DisneyStore.com. This one had fully painted "prize" figures of Woody, Buzz, and two aliens. It also included eight molded-in-green aliens made from the same mold, but unpainted. There is also a Takara-Tomy brand name version that was apparently available in Japan and China. It has a sticker on the operating panel, and comes with the same figures, except there are five painted aliens and no unpainted ones.

If anyone has one of these Space Cranes they don't want, please let me know! :)

I watched in horror as a set was on eBay once , the price climbing higher and higher, knowing there would be no way I could get it.

My Disney Holy Grail has yet to be made......and more than likely never will. I want a first class Disneyland monorail MKII in all the colors. I want it to be true O scale, run via power from the side of the monorail and be lighted.
While growing up in So Cal and going to Disneyland often (we got to go every time Dad had folks from back east visit So Cal) I liked the train....the Monorail is what captured my attention. I had monorail lust so bad I started to build my own half scale train in our garage....only funds and talent kept me from getting past cutting out the floor of the lead unit before progress halted.

Do you have the Master Replicas Mark I? Those should be a good basis for an operating Mk II conversion.

My grail is a drumhead. But, like you, Steve, I kow I will never have the money to have one. I am so happy with the builder's plates, wish 1 and 2 could have been produced. I respect the copyrighter's wishes, though and they remain a very wanted item. What I would love to have is one of those eagles on the sand domes of 1, 2 and 3 and on the bell of Marsh. A reproduction is fine since the builder's plates we repro's, too.

I have a rail spike from the DRR, a caster plate, a condutor badge, and 1950's DRR tickets. I have a Disneyland admission ticket from Walt's personal stash. I guess the only thing left to complete my collection would be to retire from the Air Force and Sheriff's Office and actually work for the DRR! That is the true grail; the memories and friendships and working with Walt's toys. That is the ultimate grail.
