Not sure if this should go in this part of the board, but I was just watching a really neat film that someone's father took when they went to the Chicago Railroad Fair in 1948 and 1949!
I figured since this is what Walt and Ward Kimball attended, it would be really neat to see a little of what they saw!
For me, it's an amazing glimpse of what was probably an awesome event!

Can you imagine allowing kids to climb on locomotives? People walking through a rail yard? Steam locomotives operating within feet of the public without fences or yellow tape? Pretty much none of Chicago Rail Fair could happen again.....Can you imagine seeing some of that equipment in operation today?

All of the Railfairs at the California State RR Museum in Sacramento, California were like that. Yes, you could get up and touch (if you were that crazy) even the big locomotives like the SP 4449, UP 844, and UP 3985 at those events. I have been to all of the Sacramento Railfairs and no fences or yellow tape were to be found anywhere.Dave Van wrote: Steam locomotives operating within feet of the public without fences or yellow tape?

Good to know....only 3000 miles away!! All the events back east here are not at all like that. Part due to dumb people and in part due to hungry lawyers. The fact the California show is on museum grounds and that you most likely are a member or have to buy a ticket with a liability waiver attached helps. Back east when a steam trip comes to a public area you can't enforce the liability waiver and thus you just keep everyone 20 yards away!

Nice find, I especially like seeing CB&Q 637 and ICRR 201 running in the vid cause those two are sitting at the museum. I also found out we have the diamond stack thats on 201 in the video stored in a box car somewhere at the museum
