Pixelized Walt Disney World Trains

Post by ReymondSt.James »

I'm kinda new to this board, but I'll make my introduction brief. I'm Reymond St. James and have been a Disney enthusiast since I was four years old (First film was Herbie Rides Again) and regularly visit Walt's Barn and the Retlaw 1 Combine at the Los Angeles live steamers. In my spare time, I use Microsoft Paint to make what I call "pixelmotives", highly-detailed pixelized trains, and I wanted to show this off to the Burnsland forums in order to see what everyone things as well as get additional help in finishing it:

I started working on the Walt Disney World locomotives first, with the Disneyland locomotives coming afterwards. My only problems are the odd frame designs for the Roy O. and Lilly Belle, especially under their firebox, so if you find issue as I've depicted them so far, it's only because I just used standard locomotive frames I got from a friend's drawings. I hope you all like my Disney pixeltrains!

I managed to edit the Lilly and Roy's frames, I hope it looks about prototypical to the actual locomotives.

Welcome!

You have a good start, but depending on how detailed you want to make them, you'd need to revise the frames and spring rigging. Also, the firebox of the Walter/Roger looks way too shallow.

Get yourself a copy of "Modern Locomotive Construction" by Meyer. Also, you can check out Preston's frames here, if you scroll down a bit:

C.K. Holliday Project

MS Paint might not be the best medium for your project. Ever thought of doing it in AutoCAD?

Welcome!

Those are neat drawings. Can't wait to see the finished product.

I haven't tried Autocad, and I somewhat take liberties sometimes when making trains, especially when doing locomotives using only photos. As for Autocad, I've done some detailed work for when I did Sierra No. 3, as seen here: http://omega-steam.deviantart.com/art/S ... -405850401

More edits over five days work for all four trains (since Sunday), fixed the frames and compressors as well as added more bits.

Well, it's definitely eons better than anything I can do in Paint. Sierra No. 3 looks awesome!

You're "trying to get them right," right?

You can get what you need from photos, and knowing how other engines were built. The engine frames of the four Baldwins differ really only in number of axle boxes. Don't underestimate yourself! I believe the "slab" frames are incorrect--I thought the ones you used earlier were more accurate. But it is hard to see in some photos.

Take some time to do a little research, and you'll be rewarded with wonderful-looking--and accurate--works! It may not happen overnight, but you're not in a race, right?

Steve Burns has compiled a lot of photos, including detail photos, and engine statistics, which can be found here: http://www.burnsland.com/sdra/index.shtml

Just to note: the reason I do my trains on MS Paint rather than a more professional thing like AutoCAD is because I know the limitations of MS pixels and I take that limitation as a challenge, which makes the product all much sweeter. That, and if I used autocad to smooth out all the pixels and stuff, I can't call them "pixelmotives" anymore, so I'm perfectly happy making tiny, less-detailed trains rather than big, very detailed trains.

Oh, and I've seen Steve Burns' photosd. They're nice but I'm always looking for larger photos in excess of 1024x768
