Ed Lingenfelter's Drawings

Post by Steve DeGaetano »

This is Ed's drawing of the C.K. Holliday. This post is an experiment--I've had it scanned at full size, but I don't know if Photobucket can host an 11MB image. If not, this will serve as a placeholder. Steve B. has gracioulsy agreed to host the image at full size once I get the drawing to him.

BTW, Roy, the height from the floor to the top of the cab: 69".

Ed was a draftsman for the Pennsylvania Railroad at the turn of the century until he moved to CA in 1910. After the move, he was a draftsman with the Southern Pacific Railroad in LA. He retired in 1946 to tend to his rose garden in Pasadena, but in 1950 he got a call from Walt Disney...

Some steam locomotives needed to be designed.

Wow, that would be awesome to see at full-size. I think image shack can host pretty large images. Otherwise, load it on a file server site (I always use Media Fire) or use Steve B's generosity. :D

This drawing is the most notable because it includes lots of dimensions.

Thanks for that dimension, Steve. I'd have to duck just to get in that cab, and it's been upscaled to 3/4 actual size, vs. 3/5 for the rest of the locomotive.

Here are a couple more. These are probably the earliest renderings of what would eventually be the C.K. Holliday and the E.P. Ripley done by Ed. These drawings were given to Disney artists, who then colored them in, in order to test out various paint schemes.

C.K. Holliday:

E.P. Ripley:

Here's a Ripley color study using the above drawing, looking very much the way she would appear on Opening Day. Notice the engine is named "Wm. B. Strong" (another Santa Fe executive. The "B." stands for Barstow. There's a town in CA named for him).

Here's my interpretation/guesses of the frame. Looks like the original's "V" forward of the front driver is steeper.

And the jaw's detail. I don't think there will ever be the way to know what it actually looks like without disassembling the real #1.

Close enough?
