Re: What is the Oldest, Regularly Operating Locomotive in the US
Not the oldest but the Heisler (Engine #2, Tuolumne) at Roaring Camp was built in 1899 and still operates regularly... Their Baldwin plantation locomotive (Engine #3, Kahuku) was built in 1890 and is operational but only runs a few times a year. Has the Tuolumne been running more frequently? I was ...

Re: What is the Oldest, Regularly Operating Locomotive in the US
Original boiler or replacement? I'd have to say the engines at Knott's. 464 was built in 1903. Maud/Ward Kimball in 1902 but on what I believe to be her third or fourth boiler. Our Vulcans were built in 22 and 23 with new boilers in 90 and 92. I think the 340 and 464 were definitely overhauled by t...

Re: Anyone happen to know where EP Ripley is headed ?
So, I did manage to pick up Ripley's whereabouts yesterday. She's headed to a Disney warehouse offsite to get a new paint job and to have her tender deck resurfaced. Apparently there were logistic issues including other projects and the inability of the fire suppression system in the roundhouse to d...

Re: DRR To Close For Star Wars Land Construction
The static display has ended as of today. Funny, they didn't even put an engine out on display for the final day. Railroad is on track to return the end of July. From what I heard at Fullerton, they were "closing shop" early at New Orleans Square to focus in on the Kalamazoo and the Holli...

What is the Oldest, Regularly Operating Locomotive in the US
Just for fun, but what are the oldest regularly operating steam locomotives out there? For me, the Rio Grande Southern 41 comes to mind as the oldest regularly operating engine as Knott's pretty much runs her most of the time and she rolled out of the shop in 1881. 340 would fit too but it's been do...

Re: Fred Gurley's Sister coming to Orange Empire
ask them to post a photo of the builder's plate. I don't think the engine is their's, so I don't know if they have access to it. When I last spoke with the volunteers at the narrow gauge barn, they had no information regarding the engine and didn't even know it was coming to Orange Empire. All they...

Re: Fred Gurley Locomotive Discussion
Cane harvesting took place in the autumn. I guess my prediction is the engines would have been delivered at least by summer to give them time to break them in and ready them for the harvest. It would interesting to see if we can locate information on what time of year the engines were built and the...

Re: Walter's Red Consist out for Summer refurb
I have no idea what computer equipment has to do with a locomotive's tractive effort. I think what they were trying to say is that the computer equipment is adding additional weight to the engine and is adding to the load it needs to move around. Unless the computer equipment is directly over the d...

Re: Fred Gurley Locomotive Discussion
Like most things in historical documentation, it may not be an error at all. What is written on paper does not always match what happened in life. Was the engine slated to be completed in 1894, but issues, worker strikes, building slow down, fire at Baldwin, customer non-payment, etc cause the engi...
