I can't speak to a preheating method on the WDW locomotives. In terms of just letting a crosshead pump run unmonitored, that could result in high water situations, amongst other things. Simply relying on the notion that the pump is feeding water isn't a good practice with respect to firing a boiler....

Crosshead pumps only function when a locomotive is moving. Additionally, they are delivering water directly from the tender into the boiler, which is basically dumping cold water into a hot boiler. Sure, I'd like to see the railroad operating, but I think seeing the locomotives and talking to the people who maintain them would be plenty interesting. If you know what you're looking at, a dead locomotive can be educational.

I just acquired an On30 2-4-4T and before I tear into it, wanted to get some insight from others. If nothing else, I'd be curious if there's a cab conversion that is similar to the Ward K.
